It was a slow end to the year for work. I had another session for the voice over project that I’ve been working on and several nice auditions – for a new play, a vampire film, an award-winning television series and a national commercial. National commercial auditions are as rare as four leaf clovers these days!
As we are building up to the Oscars, I saw several films that are likely to be nominated – The Substance, A Real Pain, Porcelain War, The Girl With The Needle, and Nickel Boys. All offered something original apart from Nickel Boys which I felt suffered from cinematography I found pretentious and confusing to follow.
Porcelain War was directed by Brendan Bellomo who I worked with back in 2019 so it was wonderful to see that this documentary had won the US Grand Jury Prize at Sundance this year. I was able to congratulate Brendan at a KCRW screening of the film at the Culver Theater in November. It’s always fascinating to see where life can take you. From Brendan writing and directing the proof of concept drama I shot with him in 2019, to co-directing a documentary about artists’ passion for life and their survival and resistance during the war in Ukraine.
The blockbuster film that came out in November was, Wicked, but once I heard that they’d split the story into two films, I was so annoyed by the commercialism that I have chosen to boycott the movie.
For my film recommendation in this blog, I choose, Anora. It’s described as a romantic, comedy drama but this sells it short. It’s a comedy, yes – a dark comedy that throws organised crime and the Russian mafia into the middle of a whirlwind love affair and I thought it was hilarious.
