At the beginning of May, I went to a screening. This was no ordinary screening – it was the screening of a film that I should have been in. I was, in fact, cast in the role of, Professor Clarke, in the Amazon Prime movie, Emergency, last year but because of quarantine requirements in the UK, I had to turn down the role as I was also cast in the UK TV series, This Sceptred Isle, and I couldn’t shoot in Atlanta and then get over to London in time to shoot, This Sceptred Isle, for Sky TV. So, I had to turn the role down.
It’s always interesting to go to a screening of a film that you are in but, now I know that it is even stranger to see a film that you should have been in. That aside, at the screening, I found out that the writer and the director of, Emergency, had met at my beloved, Film Independent – the community I belong to of individuals that “appreciate and sustain artist-driven film making”. I was so pleased to discover this.
I knew the film would be successful – it has a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – and it didn’t disappoint. After the screening there was a Q&A with the writer, Oscar nominated, K D Dávila, and the director, Carey Williams, so I was able to go up and introduce myself to them later and congratulate them on the film and apologise again for having had to let them down last year.
Other than that, the rest of the month was quieter as I am leaving to go to the UK in June so there were less auditions in the US but a couple of nice auditions for the UK – a feature film shooting in Scotland and a children’s TV show about football, my favourite topic!
I am also shooting the independent film, Purple, at the beginning of June so there were rehearsals, wardrobe fittings and consultations as to whether to wear my hair curly or not!
Even though the Emmys aren’t until September, as a member of SAG-AFTRA and Film Independent, I received a lot of “For your consideration” emails in May and was able to catch up on a few TV shows that I’ve missed. This leads me to my recommendation for the month. I thoroughly enjoyed, The White Lotus, so if you haven’t seen this yet, subscribe to HBO Max. Mike White has written something truly original here and unbelievably hilarious!
